Fred is a model I have already worked with, and together we have explored several very different shooting styles. For this session, I wanted to take him out of his usual comfort zone by offering something more graphic, with a very tight portrait framing.
I used LED tube lights as the main source, which you can see as thin white streaks reflected in his eyes. The light is both very soft on his face and still directional enough to shape contrast, which works especially well for a male portrait where the skin texture and beard add character.
Barn doors on the sides of the tubes help control the beam and prevent the light from spilling onto the background, which I wanted to keep very dark to enhance the dramatic feel of the portrait.
